How To Prepare Your Site For A Carport Installation

Metal carports are an excellent way to protect your car or outdoor equipment from the elements, as we know mother nature can be unpredictable. They are also a great way to create additional storage space or outdoor workspace. But before you are ready to buy a carport, you must have your site prepared for installation. When it comes to installing a carport, preparation is key. The site on which the carport will be installed must be prepared correctly to ensure the carport can be installed safely and securely. In this blog post, we will discuss how to prepare your site for carport installation. We will cover various installation surface types, including dirt, gravel, concrete, and asphalt. We will also discuss how to ensure your site is level and has enough space for installation.

Tools And Materials Needed For Site Preparation

Before you start preparing your site, you need to gather the right tools and materials. Here are some of the tools and materials that you may need:

  • A shovel

  • A rake

  • A steel tamper

  • A level

  • A measuring tape

  • Stakes and string

  • Crushed stone

  • Concrete

  • Water

Preparing A Dirt Site For Carport Installation

Preparing a dirt site for carport installation requires a bit of work. Here are the steps you need to follow:

Clear the Area

Clear the area where you want to install the carport. Remove any rocks, debris, or vegetation from the area. Use a shovel or a rake to level the ground as much as possible. If the area is quite large you may consider renting a mini or full size skid steer.

Mark the Site

Use stakes and string to mark the site where you want to install the carport. This will help you to ensure that the site is level and that the carport will be installed in the correct location.

Level the Site

Use a steel tamper to pack down the soil and create a level surface. Start at the edges of the site and work your way towards the center. Check the site's level using a level or a measuring tape. The site should be no more than 3 inches out of level.

Install the Carport

With the site level, you can now install the carport. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure that the carport is installed correctly. We offer free delivery and installation on all of our carports.

Preparing a Gravel Site for Carport Installation

Preparing a gravel site for carport installation is similar to preparing a dirt site. Here are the steps you need to follow:

Clear the Area

Clear the area where you want to install the carport. Remove any rocks, debris, or vegetation from the area. Use a rake to level the ground as much as possible. If the area is quite large you may consider renting a mini or full size skid steer.

Mark the Site

Use stakes and string to mark the site where you want to install the carport. This will help you to ensure that the site is level and that the carport will be installed in the correct location.

Level the Site

Use a steel tamper to pack down the gravel and create a level surface. Start at the edges of the site and work your way towards the center. Check the site's level using a level or a measuring tape. The site should be no more than 3 inches out of level.

Add More Gravel

Add more gravel to the site if needed. Make sure that the gravel is evenly spread and packed down.

Install the Carport

With the site level and the gravel in place, you can now install the carport. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure that the carport is installed correctly. We offer free delivery and installation on all of our carports.

Preparing a Concrete Site for Carport Installation

A concrete surface is a popular choice for carport installation because it is durable and low-maintenance. However, it can be challenging to prepare the site for a concrete surface.

Here are some steps to prepare your site for a concrete surface:

Excavate the site

Remove any debris, rocks, vegetation, or other obstacles from the site. This will ensure that the surface is even and the concrete will be applied evenly. You should excavate your site to have a minimum of 12 in wide and deep footings, with the general pad depth of 4 inches.

Grade the site

Typically, when pouring concrete outside you may want to have it pitched to factor for it draining. However the base rails for carports are manufactured at a 90 degree angle and requires the concrete to be level.

Set up forms

Set up forms to define the perimeter of the concrete slab. The forms should be made of wood or metal and should be secured firmly in place.

Install reinforcement

Install reinforcement materials such as wire mesh or rebar to help prevent cracking and ensure a stronger final product. We require our concrete to have #4 rebar as our general reinforcement.

Install a vapor barrier

If the site is located in an area with high moisture, install a vapor barrier to prevent moisture from seeping into the concrete and causing damage over time.

Pour and level the concrete

Pour the concrete into the forms and level it with a screed board. Use a bull float to smooth the surface and remove any excess water.

Finish the surface

Once the concrete has been poured and smoothed, use a trowel to create a smooth finish. Additional finishing techniques, such as stamping or staining, can also be used to create a decorative surface.

Allow the concrete to cure

After the concrete has been poured, it will need to cure for several days. Cover the surface with a curing compound to ensure a strong and durable final product.

By following these steps, you can prepare your site for a concrete surface that will be strong, durable, and long-lasting.

We require concrete to have a monolithic concrete footing rated at 3000 PSI minimum to meet engineering requirements for structures 12 feet to 30 feet wide. For structures larger than 30 feet wide please contact us for more information on concrete requirements.

Preparing An Asphalt Site for Carport Installation

Here are some general steps to prepare your site for an asphalt surface:

Clear the site

Remove any vegetation, debris, or other materials from the site. This can be done using a variety of tools, including a backhoe, bulldozer, or excavator.

Grade the site

Hire a grading company to level the site or grade it yourself. Its going to require shovels, rakes, and possibly bigger equipment such as a skid steer. Get the site as close to level as possible before moving to the next step. The depth of the excavation can vary however we would recommend excavating a minimum of 8 inches for your base layer and another 3-4 for your asphalt.

Compact the soil

Use a compactor to compress the soil and create a solid base for the asphalt surface. This will help ensure the surface is stable and durable. You can rent a compactor from a local equipment rental business.

Install a base layer

Lay down a layer of crushed stone or gravel as a base for the asphalt surface. This layer should be 6-8 inches thick for most residential pads and should also be compacted to ensure stability.

Apply a tack coat

Apply a thin layer of tack coat to the base layer to help the asphalt adhere to the surface.

Lay the asphalt

Finally, lay the asphalt surface using a paving machine. The thickness of the asphalt layer will depend on the specific requirements of your project. We recommend going with a solid 4 inches to insure it will be less likely to crack and flake.

Compact the asphalt

Once the asphalt has been laid, use a roller or compactor to compress and smooth the surface. This will help ensure the surface is even and durable.

Keep in mind that the specific steps required to prepare your site for an asphalt surface may vary depending on factors such as the size and slope of the site, as well as the specific requirements of your project. It is always best to consult with a professional asphalt contractor to determine the best approach for your specific needs.
