Two car garages come in a variety of sizes with some sizes more common than others. The most common sizes we see are 20'x20' and 24'x25 with 20'x20' being the smallest size we would recommend. On the other hand, 24'x25' is a great option for most homeowners looking to buy a metal building and save money from traditional garage construction.
In this guide you will learn the difference in our options when it comes to the sizing of two car metal garages and what to consider when deciding the size of your garage.
2 Car Metal Garage Dimensions: Width
Two car metal garages generally have a minimum width of 20 feet and usually do not exceed 30 feet in width. Generally, you want to have 3 feet on each side of your average 6 feet wide automobile giving you enough room to swing your door open and comfortably get in and out. This makes a 24 feet wide garage the optimal width for comfortability.
If you are looking for even more room then you may want to go up to a 30 feet wide garage. This would give you an additional 6 feet of floor space, which could be used for storage, or cabinets for tools and gardening supplies.
2 Car Metal Garage Dimensions: Length
Two car metal garages have a minimum length of 20 feet with some larger options going 30 and even 35 feet. Metal garage lengths are standard in increments of 5 feet. For two car garages the most common sizes or lengths are 20, 25, and 30 feet. Each having their own
benefits.
20 feet long garages are ideal for smaller and more compact vehicles. Perfect if you don't have any additional storage needs and don't plan on getting a bigger SUV or truck. 25 Feet long garages give you that extra length for those bigger vehicles. 30 feet long garages give you an additional 5 feet of space that can be used for storage or other uses even with bigger vehicles.
2 Car Garage Dimensions: Wall Height
The height of a 2 car metal garage is 9 feet tall side walls at a minimum with heights going as tall as 20 feet. It's not common to see a 2 car metal garage built at 20 feet tall but it can be done. 9 feet is much more common with that being the minimum height needed to install 8x8 garage doors. 8x8 garage doors are the smallest doors we would recommend for getting average sized cars in.
As for some other heights that we see a lot is 10, 12, and 14 feet tall. 10 feet is a nice round number that people like to use and so that makes it a common choice for height. Same goes for 12 with it being a nice size to work with. 14 stands apart with it being the highest a garage can be built without need to have a lift on site for construction.
Standard 2 Car Garage Sizes
Standard size of a two car garage may depend on your neighborhood and the type of material used for the build. While stick built garages built from traditional construction are 24x24 the standard 2 car metal garage is 24x25. This is due to the fact that metal garages are built 5 feet on center and base rails lengths have to match.
The size of a 2 car metal garage can be made 24x24 simply by opting into 4 feet on center. This will give the garage more strength and allow you to get the same size as a traditional stick built garage.
2 Car Garage Clearance Height
Clearance height is the max height of the garage from the floor to the roof brace or truss. Below is a chart that gives you the different clearance height based on the dimensions of various 2 car garage sizes with our stand 3/12 roof pitch.
2 Car Garage Width | A-Frame/ Vertical Roof | Regular Roof |
20 Feet | Leg Height + 31 Inches | Leg Height + 33 Inches |
22 Feet | Leg Height + 28 Inches | Leg Height + 31 Inches |
24 Feet | Leg Height + 30 Inches | Leg Height + 29 Inches |
26 Feet | Leg Height + 16 Inches | Leg Height + 24 Inches |

Getting More With Roof Pitch
The pitch you choose in a 2 car garage can effect the height of your inside clearance and can be a deciding factor on whether to build a loft on the inside. A loft is a great way to add additional storage without giving up any area on your property. It can add enough room for an office, or a game room for your kids.
The roof pitch and width will determine your clearance with the steeper roof pitch giving you the most room vertically. We offer the following roof pitches: 3/12 (Standard), 4/12, 5/12, and 6/12.
One way to understand the pitch more is by thinking of your standard 24 feet wide 2 car garage and the roof being a triangle on top. The height of the triangle will be determined by roof pitch. A 3/12 roof pitch will produce a peak of 3 feet above the wall height, while 6/12 roof pitch will be 6 feet above the wall height at the peak.
2 Car Metal Garage Square Footage
The square footage of the garage can be a factor while deciding the dimensions that work best for you. Certain dimensions are going to be better because of the amount of space you have or need and the price it takes to build a garage according to that size.
Here is a table that gives you some of our most common square footages.

2 Car Garage Door Sizes
The size of the garage doors will be an important factor of the garage size. You may want extra tall doors if you have taller vehicles such as sprinter vans or work trucks you plan to store in your garage. You may also want wide doors if you plan on backing a trailer or boat in the garage. We currently offer roll up style garage doors that have the option to have an electric garage door opener kit installed as well on most sizes. To install a garage door, the wall height needs to be at least one foot taller than the garage door.
The garage doors sizes we carry 8x8, 9x8, 10x8, 10x10, 12x12, and 14x14. The width is the first measurement and the height is the second measurement respectively.
While 8x8 garage doors will allow most small vehicles, we would consider them the smallest size for your small car or compact vehicle. If you are wanting wider doors that are easier to pull in and out, 10 feet wide garage doors would be the first recommendation followed by 10x10 garage doors to give you that extra height for taller vehicles.
If you need something bigger than a 10x10, we have the 12x12 and 14x14 rollup garage doors available. The only luxury that's not included on those sizes is our electric garage door kit.
Key Price Points For 2 Car Garage Sizes
When deciding on a particular size garage, you may want to consider a few sizes based on some key price points. The width of the garage is the number 1 option to look into when deciding the size of your garage. 24 feet is the widest structure you can have without the need for a welded truss making 24 feet and under more economical.
Height is also a major factor in the price. The height of the garage costs substantially more when you go above 14 feet because a lift is required. Needing a lift generally will cost an additional $2100.00 and require a 30 foot working perimeter, which may not be ideal for most.
